The race title reflects the title sponsor, Carroll Shelby International, which has its home base at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, and the Shelby Cobra 427, which is made in Nevada. The race had previously been 400.5 miles (644.5 km) in length, but had an extra 27 miles (43 km) added into the race, making for an additional 18 laps. The race would return to 400.5 miles the following year.
