A Brightness Long Ago is a historical fantasy novel[1] by Canadian writer Guy Gavriel Kay published in 2019 by Viking Press.[2] It is inspired from the events of 15th-century Italy leading to the Italian Wars,[2] and particularly the feud between Federico da Montefeltro and Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta.[1]
It is a pseudo-prequel[1] set in the fantasy world of Batiara decades before the events of the 2016 novel Children of Earth and Sky,[2] but readable as a stand-alone novel.[1] Batiara is Kay's analogue to early Renaissance Italy.[1]
The dust jacket cover art of the Canadian and US editions depicted birds and was created by Adrian Hillman.[3] Embedded in the dust jacket were specks of gold foil whose sparkling reflection of light made it "stand out" on bookstore shelves.[4]: 32
