The Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) is the national science academy in South Africa. It was started in 1996, and encompasses all fields of scientific work.[2] Its legal foundation is the Academy of Science of South Africa Act, Act 67 of 2001, which came into operation in May 2002.[3]

The ASSAf was inaugurated in March 1996 by the former President of South Africa and patron of the academy, Nelson Mandela.[4]

In 2021, the academy had 632 members.[5]
