Alexander W. Astin (May 30, 1932 – May 18, 2022) was the Allan M. Cartter Distinguished Professor of Higher Education and Organizational Change, at the University of California, Los Angeles.[2]

He was founding director of the Higher Education Research Institute[3] at UCLA. He has served as Director of Research for both the American Council on Education and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.[4] He was also the founding director of the Cooperative Institutional Research Program, an ongoing national study of some fifteen million students, 300,000 faculty and staff, and 1,800 higher education institutions.
