Battalgazi, formerly and colloquially Eskimalatya (Kurdish: Melediya kevn), is a municipality and district of Malatya Province, Turkey.[2] Its area is 947 km2,[3] and its population is 307,478 (2022).[1] At the 2013 reorganisation part of the former central district of Malatya Province was added to the district.[4] It covers the eastern part of the agglomeration of Malatya and the adjacent countryside. The mayor is Osman Güder (AKP).
The town center corresponds to the previous location of Malatya proper, at a distance of 20 km from the modern day urban center and provincial seat of Malatya. The town was renamed in honor of Battal Gazi during the Republican period.
