Produced by Ilya Salmanzadeh, "Breathin" is a dance-pop song that features synthesizers and an upbeat production incorporating disco and EDM elements. The lyrics discuss how breathing can alleviate panic attacks, based on Grande's experiences with post-traumatic stress disorder as a result of a terrorist bombing that killed 22 people in one of her concerts.
