Brown Peninsula (78°6′S 165°25′E / 78.100°S 165.417°E / -78.100; 165.417 (Brown Peninsula)) is a nearly ice-free peninsula, 10 nautical miles (19 km; 12 mi) long and 4 nautical miles (7.4 km; 4.6 mi) wide, which rises above the Ross Ice Shelf northward of Mount Discovery, to which it is connected by a low isthmus. It was discovered by the British National Antarctic Expedition, 1901–04 (BrNAE), which named it "Brown Island" because of its color and its island-like character. Since it is a peninsula, the name has been altered accordingly.[1]
