The legal entity of a "town" is recognized by Missouri statutes, but has been superseded by §72.050 of the Missouri Revised Statutes.
- If incorporated, populated places should be categorized as Category:Cities in Missouri or Category:Villages in Missouri; determined by their legal designation.
- If unincorporated, they belong in Category:Unincorporated communities in Missouri or Category:Census-designated places in Missouri.
- If no longer in existence, they belong in Category:Ghost towns in Missouri.
