Deliberate out of bounds

In Australian rules football, deliberate out of bounds is the common name for a rule which results in a free kick against a team which puts the ball out of bounds with insufficient intent to keep the ball in bounds.

An alternative, simplified, rule which penalises players whose kick or handball crosses the boundary line with a free kick to the opposition is known as a last possession out of bounds (or last touch) rule. This variation operates in some leagues, most notably the South Australian National Football League (since 2016) and AFL Women's (since 2018) as well as the Australian Football League (between 1925 and 1938).[1] Both variations are often subject to complex interpretations and grey areas but generally help to reduce Boundary throw-ins and stoppages.
