Brian L. Black (born September 1966) is an American molecular biologist. He is a professor and investigator in the Cardiovascular Research Institute at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), and has served as the Director of the CVRI since March 1, 2019.^[1]

Dr. Black’s research focuses on the regulatory relationships between transcription factors and their cognate enhancers to define how cardiovascular tissues are specified and how tissue-specific gene expression is controlled during development and in response to heart injury and repair.

Black grew up in Fort Myers, Florida and attended Furman University, receiving a BS in Biology (Magna Cum Laude) in 1988.  He received a PhD in Microbiology and Immunology from Wake Forest University in 1993, working under the direction of Dr. Douglas S. Lyles.  Black conducted postdoctoral training with Dr. Eric N. Olson at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston and at UT Southwestern in Dallas from 1993-1998.  Black joined the faculty at UCSF in the CVRI and in the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics as an Assistant Professor in 1998.
