The history of the Marischal College (formally "Marischal College and University of Aberdeen") began with its foundation in 1593 when George Keith, 5th Earl Marischal established a new university in New Aberdeen, likely due to his rivalries with the Catholic Earl of Huntly. and Alexander Fraser (who had established the University of Fraserburgh a year earlier).
