József Csekonics (1757-1824) was a Hungarian cavalry captain and Percheron, specializing in the selection of war horses. He was the inventor of the breeding principle "in and in" which he described in his work Praktische Grundsätze die Pferdezucht betreffend in 1817. He proved with the creation of the Nonius in Mezőhegyes that a powerful and solid horse breed can only be obtained by a good selection of breeders, then he supported the emperor Joseph II of Austria in setting up a stud farm intended to produce war horses to remount the hussars[1].
