'Jais is an ancient town near Jais station in Amethi district, Uttar Pradesh, renowned for its association with the Hindi poet Malik Muhammad Jaisi. He composed his famous work *Padmavat* here, and he was called 'Jaisi' because he lived in Jais.
In the first quatrain of the 23rd couplet of *Padmavat*, the poet himself states:
"Jais nagar dharam-asthanu, tahan aay kavi kinh bakhanu."
This suggests that Jais was considered a holy place for the Muslim community at that time, indicating that Jaisi settled here from another location and wrote *Padmavat* during his stay. The composition period of *Padmavat* is noted as 927 Hijri, or 1527 AD. Additionally, Ujalikpur is another name that may have been used for Jais in earlier times.
Situated in the culturally rich region of Awadh, Jais has significantly contributed to the development of Awadhi culture. The town’s historical and cultural landscape is deeply intertwined with the broader cultural fabric of Awadh, known for its composite culture and syncretic traditions. While it has a significant Muslim influence, Jais has historically been home to a diverse community, enriching its cultural tapestry.
Further adding to its cultural significance, Jais is also home to the late Samiuddin (Munne chairman), who served as the chairman of Jais Nagar Palika in the past. His nephew, Afroz Jayasi, the son of Tajuddin, continues this legacy. Afroz Jayasi, belonging to an elite Syed family, is a contemporary intellectual and a notable figure in the region. His presence underscores the town's enduring legacy of producing influential and respected personalities.
In Jais, there is a mohalla called Bada Goriyana, known for its peaceful and welcoming atmosphere. The sense of community and spirituality here is truly inspiring, offering a tranquil environment for contemplation and connection, bringing peace and relaxation to the heart. Bada Goriyana is rich in the glory of Awadhi culture and the language of Lucknow, with residents contributing to its development. A simple walk through the streets immerses you in these cultural traditions, providing a unique and uplifting experience.
Don’t forget to interact with the younger generation of the elite and respected Syed families who live here. They offer a spiritual taste of life and share insights on how to live well. As Aristotle said, “The more you know, the more you realize you don’t know.” This wisdom aligns perfectly with the enlightening and practical advice you’ll find in Goriyana.
Jais's contributions to Awadhi culture, along with its historical association with Malik Muhammad Jaisi and modern notable residents like Afroz Jayasi, highlight its lasting significance in the cultural and intellectual history of the region.
