He entered the Royal Navy in 1822 as a gentleman volunteer. He participated in the capture of a pirate vessel in the Bay of Campeche off Mexico, and the rescue in 1824 by HMS Windsor Castle of John VI of Portugal out of the hands of a faction in the April Revolt.[1] He married Anne Catherine Hawker in Jersey in 1828.[2] Wilson retired from the Royal Navy and in 1832 he joined the CMS as a lay missionary.[3]
