Lake Como is a borough located in the Jersey Shore region, within Monmouth County , in the U.S. state of New Jersey . As of the 2020 United States census , the borough's population was 1,697,[ 8] a decrease of 62 (−3.5%) from the 2010 census count of 1,759,[ 16] [ 17] which in turn reflected a decline of 47 (−2.6%) from the 1,806 counted in the 2000 census .[ 18] It is the tenth-smallest municipality by land area in New Jersey.[ 19]
Lake Como was originally formed as the borough of South Belmar by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 12, 1924, from portions of Wall Township , subject to the results of a referendum held on May 6, 1924.[ 20] On November 2, 2004, voters in the borough approved changing the locality's name to Lake Como, which became effective as of January 4, 2005.[ 21]
