Marquis of Pombal (title)

The first Marquis of Pombal.

Count of Oeiras (Portuguese: Conde de Oeiras) was a Portuguese title of nobility created by a royal decree, dated July 15, 1759, by King Joseph I of Portugal, and granted to Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, Chief Minister of the Portuguese government.

Later, Joseph issued a royal decree dated September 16, 1769, in which he elevated the Count of Oeiras to the dignity of a marquisate as the Marquis of Pombal (Portuguese: Marquês de Pombal).
