The Reverend Stephanus Jacobus du Toit (Afrikaans pronunciation: [stəˈfɑːnœs jaˈkuəbœs dyˈtwa]; 9 October 1847 – 29 May 1911) was a controversial South African nationalist, theologian, journalist . In his younger years Du Toit did much to promote the Afrikaans language as a symbol of Afrikaner nationalism. Apart from the years 1882-8 when he was Superintendent of Education in the South African Republic, he lived in or near the town of Paarl in the Cape Colony. He disagreed and warned as reverend with his friend, Paul Kruger and his regime about making war with England. Kruger didn't keep his promises to give the English residents their right too vote. Du Toit said if his warning is not from the Lord, they will win the war, like it was at Majuba. Otherwise it will be a very sad outcome for South Africa. (We knew the sad story about the concentration camps...).He was till the end of his life a preacher of God for his beloved people. Even when his words came true, he stood by his people and gave them comfort out of the Word of God. He began in a small room the translation of the Bible in Afrikaans and was a proponent of the Afrikaans language. His people was wrongly bitter against this man of God and wrongly accused him of betrayal and dishonored him wrongly. Till this day he is beloved amongst the family of those who really knew him. The family of those who believed his warning and his preaching. He was truely a man of God. My father used to say, : "die Afrikanervolk gaan nie geseënd wees, voordat hul hul onreg teenoor hierdie man van God, bely het nie.."
