I am happy to review this article. I've made some minor tweaks to references so far, but will hold off editing any further until I complete a thorough review. --Animalparty! (talk) 01:06, 24 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
My apologies for not getting around to this sooner. Here are my comments:
Lead
"became known as the father of modern obstetrics." this is quite a bold statement, and should be bolstered with more concrete examples in the lead and/or direct citations that refer to him as such.
"whether childbirth was a physiologic process or a pathologic one" - what exactly does this mean?
"He was an early proponent of asepsis during childbirth, " Rather than mention the clinical term asepsis, it would probably be more informative and accessible to readers to simply state "early proponent of hygienic standards" or something to that effect.
"His advocacy of such active techniques is sometimes blamed for the rise in mechanical interventions during childbirth, a trend that persists in obstetrics today." While the body discusses his advocacy, it does not mention or cite trends that persist today, and the lead should summarize the article without adding new info per MOS:LEAD
Early life and education
"DeLee's older brother Sol lived in Chicago and provided financial support during his studies." This seems somewhat irrelevant and arbitrary to mention one of his 9 siblings.
Early career
"he opened a clinic on Chicago's Maxwell Street after consulting with Jane Addams." Jane Addams should be briefly introduced for context, e.g. "the noted social worker Jane Addams"
"The hospital provided a larger space and it focused..." larger space than what? (I'm guessing than the Maxwell Street clinic).
Influential physician
"DeLee was one of the leaders of a movement that changed the view of childbirth from a normal physiologic process to a pathologic one" - "one of the leaders" is a bit vague and should be clarified with more examples and/or inline citations to avoid the appearance of puffery, and again what does this phrase mean?
"he "often wondered whether nature did not..." this direct quote needs a page number.
"published a 1917 Journal of the American Medical Association article about his invention of the fetoscope," - the name of the journal seems extraneous, especially for a paper not written by DeLee.
The mention of Beatrice Tucker, and especially her direct quotes, seem unbalanced and out of place in this biography, and doesn't speak much to DeLee's own influence.
In general, I think his influence should be discussed in more depth. For someone called both a father and a "titan" of twentieth century obstetrics, it seems underselling when this section discusses only his advocacy for forceps and episiotomy, his criticism of midwives in childbirth, the controversial fetoscope "invention" (described in the cited source as "a story of controversy and professional jealousy"), and the rather unremarkable appointing of a female employee to the Chicago Maternity Center. Perhaps rather than focusing so much on what he said or did, more emphasis could be given to how his actions shaped the profession. From just casual reading of the sources, choice aspects to highlight include his advocacy of strict sanitation guidelines/asepsis, he "pioneered the use of movies for medical teaching", and was "one of the earliest advocates of the lower segment Caesarean section, and he was the first obstetrician to insist on the use of face-masks in midwifery practice."
Later career
The blurb about William S. Kroger seems perhaps more appropriate in Legacy
The third paragraph regarding infections in hospitals might fit better in "Influential physician", as it does seem to be one of the main things he's known for.
The last 2 paragraphs should be combined, since they are connected.
Later life and legacy
DeLee was became an emeritus professor --> DeLee became an emeritus professor
I think I have all of these covered now, with the exception of adding more influence information. I intend to tackle that part of it tonight. EricEnfermero (Talk) 23:27, 5 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I've added some information about his influence, but in doing so, I came up with a slightly different layout that I think better balances the new lengths of the sections. Let me know what you think. I appreciate your careful reading and great suggestions so far. EricEnfermero (Talk) 07:13, 6 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I gave it a look-through and everything looks good. Since the reviewer never responded to multiple pings I'll close it myself. Wizardman16:36, 10 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
