A street corner in the
ghost town
of
Bodie, California
, named after
William S. Bodey
who discovered
gold
in the area in 1859. By 1880 Bodie had a population of nearly 10,000. Bodie is also notable for a
hydroelectric
plant built 13 miles (21 km) away in 1893, one of the first transmissions of
electricity
over long distance. The town was declared a
National Historic Landmark
in 1961 and has been in a state of
arrested decay
ever since.
