The village's influence is visible in Tennyson's work, and the British literary scholar Christopher Ricks relates the following lines from In Memoriam A.H.H., describing Tennyson's abandonment of once-loved places after the death of his friend, to the rectory:
Unwatched, the garden bough shall sway,
The tender blossom flutter down,
Unloved, that beech will gather brown,
This maple burn itself away.
