A male (top) and female
eastern rosella
(
Platycercus eximius
). These
rosellas
, which average 30 cm (12 in) in length, are native to southeastern
Australia
and
Tasmania
. The species, first described by
George Shaw
in 1792, is sometimes considered a subspecies of the
pale-headed rosella
; the two
hybridize
where their ranges meet.
