George S. Boutwell
(January 28, 1818 – February 27, 1905) was an American statesman and lawyer who served as
Secretary of the Treasury

Ulysses S. Grant
),
Governor of Massachusetts
, a U.S.
Senator

Representative
, and the first
Commissioner of Internal Revenue
(under President
Abraham Lincoln
). Boutwell, an
abolitionist
, was instrumental in the formation of the
Republican Party
, and championed African-American citizenship and suffrage rights during
Reconstruction
. He was a leader in the
impeachment of Andrew Johnson
in 1868.
