The Pump House Gang is a 1968 collection of essays and journalism by Tom Wolfe. The stories in the book explored various aspects of the counterculture of the 1960s. The title essay, is based on a two-part New York Herald Tribune Sunday Magazine article, The New Life Out There,[1] about Jack Macpherson and his social circle of surfers that congregated at a sewage pump house at Windansea Beach in La Jolla, California.[2]
