Mrs. Carol Broos is a Be A Techie. She wants to create a culture of expanding music through technology.

She has been at Sunset Ridge School District #29 [1] in Northfield, Illinois since 1987. In 2004, a Soundtree 13-station Mac MIDI lab, with controller-headsets was installed. Additionally, Sunset Ridge has been a part of the Vermont MIDI project [2] for the past since 2005. Students compose music and professional composer mentors comment on a password protected website.

Also on the website is http://www.beatechie.com a teacher-friendly website where teachers have posted their work they have completed at her presentations. There are links, blogs, pictures, and videos. It also has all the handouts and (powerpoint) presentations for downloading.

Her website has received the “school website of the week” for March 16, 2007 by techlearning.com. [3] It won "Best of the Web" from Digital Learning in September 2007 for the best-student centered site.[4]<ref>


She has presented at many conventions and recently taught in Vermont as part of the Vermont MIDI project.

She was awarded the "Mary Hoffman" award from Illinois Music Educators Association in January 2008 and is a Discovery "Star" educator.


She has published an article for Technology Institute of Music Educators (Spring 2007, Vol. 9, No, 2) titled “GarageBand, not GarbageBand.” [5] She has presented at the Illinois Music Educators Convention (IMEA), the National Technology Institute of Music Educators (TI:ME), Ohio Music Educators Conference (OMEA), Illinois Technology Conference for Educators (IL-TCE), and Illinois Educational Technology Conference (IETA). She is teaching “Movie Making” as part of the Vermont MIDI Project professional development workshop this Summer 2007. She is also involved with a three hour hands-on workshop “GarageBand for the Classroom,” as part of the Summer Experience North 2007 at Stevenson High School and Western Illinois University. Additionally, she is teaching Sunset Ridge summer workshops for classroom teachers: iWeb, Blogging, and Podcasting and a one-day institute on Podcasting. She taught a hands-on class “GarageBand for the Classroom,” for the Summer Experience North at Stevenson High School, as part of Western Illinois University this summer of 2007. She will present in April 2008 at the Music Educators National Conference (MENC) Finally, she is an Illinois provider for CPDU’S.
