Jessica Cooney is an archaeologist at the University of Cambridge. She specializes in the study of children of the Upper Palaeolithic and researches finger flutings at Rouffignac Cave, France.


Jessica Behrman Cooney was born in Chicago in December 1984 to Daniel Cooney and Debra Behrman. She has two younger sisters.

Jessica grew up in Glencoe, IL. She attended New Trier High School and did her undergraduate degree at Barnard College, graduating in 2007. She received her MSc in Early Prehistory from the University of York in 2008. She is currently completing her PhD at the University of Cambridge in the Department of Archaeology and Anthropology, Faculty of Archaeology. Jessica is a member of St John's College.

Jessica is involved in research at Rouffignac Cave in France, joining director Dr. Leslie Van Gelder to study finger flutings. The 'discovery' that prehistoric children made cave art made headlines around the world in September 2011[1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7]

Jessica was awarded a Gates Scholarship for her PhD. She is a committee member of The Society for the Study of Childhood in the Past (SSCIP).
