The Kitao school (北尾派, kitao-ha) was a school of ukiyo-e painting and printing founded by Kitao Shigemasa. The school saw the development of the new ideal of female beauty that represents a turning away from the frail, delicate woman favored by artists such as Suzuki Harunobu and his followers to a fuller and more robust figure that is closer to reality. It is also credited with the change in hair style and in depiction of the kimono. The figure's hair is arranged in the bin style, with two projecting side wings held by a strip of thin bone referred to as bin-sashi (鬢差), or bin-bari (鬢張り) in the Kamigata region. Also notable is the stylized garments, being far more elaborate and rendered in a detailed, realistic manner.
