PAGER-STR
It is a taxonomy of global structure types developed under the PAGER (Prompt Assessment of Global Earthquakes for Response) project. An important and challenging effort during the PAGER building inventory development was to identify and classify the global building stock according to standardized classification scheme (1). A building is a structure that consists of two parts. A substructure and a superstructure. A substructure is generally part that is below the ground surface i.e. foundation and the superstructure consists of basic elements such as wall or post and a roof that is supported by walls or posts. Each of these elements could be of different types e.g., roof can be flat or sloping (pitched), wall can be made of brick, stone, concrete or wood.
Even though all buildings have some common elements or features, across the planet they can be as distinct as their inhabitants. The real challenge is to classify the global building stock according to some key attributes such as material used for their construction (e.g., mud, brick, stone, concrete), basic structural system (e.g., vertical and horizontal load resisting elements), and how well the elements are connected (e.g., strong material, sound structural system but weaker connections).
