Ben H. Allen new article content ... Ben H Allen’s goal is simple: to work on music projects that he would want to listen to. Armed with the ability and the flexibility to work as a mixer or a producer, Ben has made a name for himself.
Ben came up in the ranks of the Bad Boy camp, engineering records with Puff Daddy, Mase and Lil’ Kim. After a brief stint working for pop producer Mike Mangini (David Byrne, Joss Stone), Ben moved back to Georgia, opened Maze Studios and began mixing underground rap records for artists such as Gangsta Boo, Rasheeda and Bonecrusher, quickly becoming a ‘go-to mixer’ in the burgeoning Atlanta hip hop scene. In 2001, Ben worked his first sessions with Cee-Lo Green. Their mutual interest in avant garde rock and the more muscular rhythms of Atlanta’s rap sound made for brilliant sessions that evolved into 2004’s Cee Lo Green is the Soul Machine. They continued their working relationship on the Gnarls Barkley project, St. Elsewhere. “Crazy”, the 1st single from St. Elsewhere, was a gigantic US, UK and international hit. Recorded and mixed by Allen, the album went on to win a Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album in 2006. Ben made his mark as a producer that same year. Working with Tony Reyes, Ben produced and co-wrote “Here to Stay” for Christina Aguilera’s Back to Basics LP and an international Pepsi campaign. Ben also co-produced Asher Roth’s hit single “I Love College”. In the last year, Ben has produced new projects for Matt and Kim, Deerhunter and “Bright Lights, Bigger City” for Cee Lo’s The Lady Killer album. Allen continues to exercise influence as a world-class mixer. In addition to mixing the projects he produces, Ben has mixed such successful and diverse projects as Animal Collective’s acclaimed Merriweather Post Pavilion, Cut/Copy’s Zonoscope, “XXXO” by M.I A., as well as new music from Trouble Andrew, Rubik, Washed Out and Givers. In addition to Ben’s busy career as a producer and mixer, Allen has started to release music on his label, MakeRecordsNotBombs. Allen’s first signing to his label, Atlanta’s The Constellations, re-released their debut album “Southern Gothic” when signing to Virgin in 2010. Ben has also signed Athens’ Reptar, releasing a single in 2010 and planning an EP for 2011.
