Lancelot Lancaster White ... a company specialised in the traditional art of box making. Boxes are generally considered simple products, however in the world of furniture boxes represent virtually every development in the art of woodwork having been used by man in its most basic format since ancient times through to the 18th and 19th centuries when some of the most elaborate examples were created with less purposeful functions and greater aesthetic appeal, employing the art of marquetry, silver inlay and veneering. Today modern technologies applied in harmony with traditional skills allow us to create truly unique boxes that are beautiful to the eye, practical and durable, and in the case of Historium boxes, contain irreplaceable elements of historic materials creating a genuine article of both fiscal and intrinsic value. Historium boxes employ the skills of numerous craftsmen in a coordinated effort to form an object of grace and function.

The essence of a Historium box is to accurately represent and give a sense of historical events and the circumstances surrounding them. This is achieved in part by the acquisition of original materials warranted by certified provenance. To further ensure a true representation is achieved we turn to the detailed research and cross referencing to separate fact from historical fiction and myth, this can take up to 6 months diligent work. Ironically it is this process more than materials that determine the direction of design and the final concept. Naturally it is the combined skills of the craftsmen involved that truly determine the final representation and this due to their knowledge and skill gained over years and in part the passion which is found and nurtured within the human heart. Thus it true to say that human abilities are one of our most precious resources.

Lancelot Lancaster White is privileged to work with and develop ideas and projects with some of the great remaining skilled craftsman and artisans of England. Historium products are created by hand using English sourced materials and traditional English craftsmanship. Though some knowledge is all but lost we make every attempt to retain the traditional knowledge and crafts of England and wherever possible regenerate these.

A new Historium project recently agreed with the NMRN is HMS Victory; England's most famous battleship and remains in service with the Royal Navy to this day since its launch in the 18th century and is in effect the oldest commissioned naval ship in the world. This project will be carried out under the auspice and guidance of the NMRN. By studying the surrounding facts and history we understand how to form wooden joints that match the era. The choice of lock was to use Bramah, a company that pioneered the patented lock in 1784, a mechanism so advance and efficient that it is still used today and in particular by us. For this one project we have created a matching set of Anchor style handles which will only be used on this project. These type of projects help raise public awareness of the passionate and skill-full human resources that are still available in England and truly serve as an example of what can be achieved with a little determination and a creative application of history, which ironically seems more relevant day by day. "History is not something in the past, History is something that started in the past".

Research and verification for this project will be made through the NMRN at Portsmouth (historically the oldest naval port in the world) and The National Maritime Museum at Greenwich. Information is always welcome from any verified external source that may help us to achieve our ultimate goal for each project.
