County Roads in West Virginia
The State of West Virginia uses a unique system of roads. Besides Interstate, Federal and State routes, each county has its own route system. The main arteries are designated with a single number from 1 to 100. These roads are usually in better condition, often have painted lines, and almost never dead-end. Minor and local roads are designated with a fraction: the numerator is the number of the nearest main road, and the denominator is a sequence number. For example, if there is a Route 9, the first minor road to connect to Route 9 will be County Route 9/1. The next one will be 9/2. Residential streets are designated as home access roads. The sign for these is a pentagon shape with a number from 900 to 999. These can also use a fractional system, but only do in some counties.
