Angel Comedy
Angel Comedy club was opened at The Camden Head Pub in Islington, 2 Camden Passage, N1 8DY in September 2010 by Barry Ferns. The Ethos of the club was unique in that it was intended to be a professional Comedy club but completely free of charge. It was intended to be a new way for audiences to come as see comedy - rather than at overpriced and often poorly run clubs.
The room in The Camden Head Pub where Angel Comedy takes place has been a regular comedy venue since the late 1980's when acts such as Simon Munnery, Jimmy Carr, Michael McIntyre, Bill Bailey, Sean Lock, indeed, most of the present crop of UK comedians would have performed regularly at this venue in their earlier careers.
The Club was initially Run by the comedians Barry Ferns and Linus Lee, who were then joined by fellow performers Katerina Vrana and Sarah Pearce as the club became busier.
Acts that have performed at the venue include Isy Suttie (from BBC's Peep Show), Simon Munnery, Ian Stone, Paul Foot, Dan Antapolski among others. All for free. The club also supports and promoted newer comedians, those rising on london's open mic circuit.
The reason for the free nature of the club is as an antidote to the increasingly expensive and mainstream london Comedy circuit.
The club continues in 2011 and is always busy, often having to turn audience members away.
