Pandora's Box (computer game) is a text-based Polish computer game developed by Marcin Borkowski in 1986. The game was programmed on ZX Spectrum computer.

Game's plot was inspired by Marek Baraniecki's novel titled "Kasandra's head". In the game, the player takes on the role of a special agent who's supposed to destroy enemy's rocket system on nondescript island. The character was moved by a set of commands.

At first, Pandora's Box was just a way to test how to compress data in ZX Spectrum's memory. The game quickly gained popularity after it had been released, and also got a favourable review in "Bajtek" computer magazine.

A limited collector's edition of the game has been released in 2012. It's premiere took place at Poznań Game Arena (PGA), the biggest game event in Poland. A data carrier for this edition is traditional ZX Spectrum's audio cassette in a small metal box that functions as collector's box for the game.

Gameplay

The game is set in the future, just after a Third World War that led to the destruction of the world. A new civilization is set up in South America to recover after the war. Nevertheless they are still in danger, as one of the countries posses dangerous rocket system called "the Pandora's Box".

The player takes on the role of a spacial agent who's target is to defuse the rocket system. The player starts his journey in the middle of an unnamed island. To complete the quest, a player can collect items scattered all over the place.

The player can control the main character by writing down commands in the command line interface. The controlled character can move into four directions, swim, climb on trees or use items. The game recognizes up to twenty words as commands.

Pandora's Box is a text-based game with graphic elements. The graphic of the surrounding area appears in the middle of the screen.

Game production and publication

At first, Marcin Borkowski was simply testing the data compression in ZX Spectrum, which had just 48 kilobytes of memory. At that time it was a major limitation in making the text-based games. After finding out how to get around this limitation, he decided to develop Pandora's Box to check if he was right. Game's plot was inspired by Marek Baraniecki's novel titled "Kasandra's head".

Pandora's Box, after becoming a popular game, was recommended in the magazine "Bajtek". The game was promoted by ENTER computing studio as "the first text-based Polish adventure game on ZX Spectrum"

Game reception

Pandora's Box gained popularity just after it was released, even though it can't be clearly stated how many copies of the game were sold. The game was reviewed in the magazine "Bajtek" supervised by Karol Mirowski. He wrote that Pandora's Box is "pretty good" and absorbing. Nevertheless he pointed out a couple of flaws, such as the half-baked scenario, lack of save option, a too vast game area, and a poor audio-visual setting. Pandora's Box was the first game reviewed in this Polish magazine.

Bartłomiej Kluska, polish journalist, pointed out that Pandora's Box was the first polish game that had its review in a Polish magazine and the first commercial game released to the Polish game market.
