Young Mariners New Zealand
Young Mariners New Zealand is an charitible organisation that runs activities for girls aged 8 to 19 years of age. It was started by Ron Bird when his dauters were declined to join the local sea scouts. A group of Young Mariners that meets at a spesific location is know an a Unit. There are currently nine active Units all based in the North Island of New Zealand. Units are lead by adult Unit Leaders and Assistant Unit Leaders. Girls in Young Mariners New Zealand are divide into two age groups Jounior Young Mariners (aged 8-11) and Young Mariners (aged 11-19).
History
The first Young Mariner Unit was established in 1981 at Bucklands Beach, Auckland. The Ohui-A-Rangi Unit has been running ever since. Who started it?
Leaders
Each Unit is lead by a Unit Leader. Unit leaders are assisted by Assistant Leaders. Leaders can be either men or woman. All Leaders must pass a police check and are incorraged to futrther their own training in areas that give them quilification to teach girls. The Units Leaders job is to see that the over all running of Unit Meetings run smoothly and that girls are given oppertunities for fun and learning. Assistant Leaders aid the Unit leaders in the running of meetings and may take on a spesific task such as keeping track of bagde work or working with a spesific age group.
Activities
Young Mariners New Zealand is a girls adventure group with many of its activities base on or around the water but they are not limited to water activities. they DOing Sailing in Cutters, Sunbursts and in Optimast
