Yung Sam Kim (PhD 1920-2004) Dr. Yung Sam Kim was named chairman of the Department of Mining Engineering at the Mackay School of Mines, University of Nevada, Reno in 1973. Dr. Kim, 54 at the time, was an associate professor of mining engineering at Montana College of Mineral Science and Technology in Butte, Mont. Born in Korea, he eventually became a US citizen. He received a Bachelor of Law degree from Kookmin College in Seoul, Korea in 1952, then came to the United States to study mining engineering at the University of Idaho in 1958; he received his Bachelor of Science degree from that institution in 1962. Dr. Kim subsequently earned his Master of Science and Ph.D. degrees in mining engineering at Pennsylvania State University in 1964 and 1969 respectively. His mining experience has included, variously between 1950 and 1962, work with the Standard Vacuum Oil Co. in Korea, the Mining Division of the United Nations Korean Reconstruction Agency in Korea, and in the engineering department of the Sunshine Mining Co. in Kellogg, Idaho. ...
