EKL bearmy new article content ... The EKL bearmy established in 2002, is an army of rescued teddy bears who are fighting mass production and consumption created by Tara Logsdon.
Self proclaimed "teddy bear surgeon" Logsdon rescues teddy bears that are in grave need of physical and psychological repair from thrift stores. Each bear is washed and rehabbed depending on the individual need and then prepped for surgery. Long hours in the OR are spent repairing their dismembered appendages using hand-stitching techniques. They are then given a new heart and eyes for a better outlook on life completing their full sensory make over. After recovery each bear is available for adoption and given a unique prescription that must be followed until they have adapted to their new environment.
The bears become symbolic soldiers raising awareness to the epidemic of waste in the world. They are rescued from abandonment and return to the world as art in various exhibits. It is a classic "rags to riches" story that transforms something that was deemed worthless into a one of a kind cherished companion.
Since 2002, approximately 500 bears have been rescued and rehabbed. Each one has been placed in a loving home in locations all over the world including Canada, Denmark, Japan, South America and the United States.
The EKL bearmy has been exhibited in various gallery shows.
