"Veterans Day"

was originally Armistice Day, armistice meaning cessation of violence. Armistice Day declared the end of WWI to be the war to end all wars. The intention was to celebrate the moment in human history, when our species came to its senses and stopped committing warfare, the ultimate human failure. — But after WWII, this celebration of peace was changed to Veterans' Day, a mournful day to honor all soldiers killed in the bleak perpetuation of war after war, at the same time the U.S. Department of War regrouped under the U.S. Department of Defense, as an offensive U.S. war industry organized (and Mothers Peace Day, which was a call for disarmament by grief-stricken mothers, became a generic celebration of motherhood).
