This page in a nutshell: Some administrators choose to acknowledge their service to Wikipedia by displaying a service award which denotes time served and number of administrative actions made. These awards are unofficial – displaying the wrong one carries no penalty (except possible disapproval from other administrators), and displaying the right one does not indicate authority or competence. |

Administrative service awards are for admins what our service awards are for Wikipedians, generally; that is, a gamification mechanism to reward the self instead of getting recognition from others.[1] These awards focus specifically on administrative actions using "the tools" as compared to mere edits done while an elected admin.
Please remember that neither the number of administrative actions nor the length of time from when "awarded the mop" is a good indicator of the quality of an administrator's actions or diplomatic ability. Hence, these service awards do not indicate any level of authority whatsoever; "master" administrators are not bestowed with more authority through this award than "novice" administrators.
