The Kingdom of Bhutan is a landlocked nation in the Himalaya Mountains, sandwiched between India and the People's Republic of China in South Asia. Bhutan is one of the most isolated nations in the world, and one where local traditions have remained the most unaffected by Western styles and economic practices. Foreign influences and tourism are heavily regulated by the government to preserve its traditional culture. The landscape ranges from subtropical plains to the Himalayan heights, in excess of 7000 m. Mahayana Buddhism is the state religion and accounts for about half the population. Thimphu is the capital and largest town.
