Le code grec de la nationalité ne prend pas en compte l’origine ethnique des citoyens et considère, comme en France, qu’il n’existe qu’une seule et indivisible Έλληνική εθνικί κοινωνία - helleniki ethniki koinonia » : la nation grecque moderne. Seules en sont exclues, en raison et en application du Traité de Lausanne (1923), les populations musulmanes de Thrace occidentale, considérées selon ce traité comme turques quelles que soient leurs langues et origines. Il est donc difficile de chiffrer l’effectif des minorités ethniques de Grèce, car aucun recensement linguistique n’a été fait depuis 1951.
