The 1986 Cal Poly Mustangs football team represented California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo as a member of the Western Football Conference (WFC) during the 1986 NCAA Division II football season. Led by Jim Sanderson in his fifth and final season as head coach, Cal Poly compiled an overall record of 5–5 with a mark of 3–3 in conference play, tying for fourth place in the WFC.[1] The team was outscored by its opponents 246 to 233 for the season. The Mustangs played home games at Mustang Stadium in San Luis Obispo, California.
