Oklahoma came into the game ranked at No. 16 in both the AP Poll and Coaches Poll while Texas Tech was unranked. The quarterback for the Sooners, Baker Mayfield, had played for the Red Raiders 3 years before this game.

Both teams broke several NCAA and school records during the game. The two teams combined for a total of 1,708 yards, the most yards in a Division I game.[1]
