On December 24, 2021, the tournament was cancelled for the second year in a row by the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[1] However, on March 21, 2022, the IIHF announced it had reconsidered and rescheduled the Top Division tournament for June 6–13, 2022 in Madison, Wisconsin, United States.[2]
The venues which hosted the event in Dane County, Wisconsin were LaBahn Arena, located on the campus of the University of Wisconsin in Madison and Bob Suter's Capitol Ice Arena in Middleton, home of the USHL's Madison Capitols.
