3 Body Problem is an American science fiction television series created by David Benioff, D. B. Weiss and Alexander Woo and the third streaming adaptation of the Chinese novel series Remembrance of Earth's Past written by former computer engineer Liu Cixin. Its name comes from the first volume, The Three-Body Problem, of the novel series and refers to a classical physics problem dealing with Newton's laws of motion and gravitation. Previous adaptations include The Three-Body Problem in Minecraft (2014–2020) and the Chinese live-action Three-Body (2023), both of which were exclusively in Mandarin.
The series, set primarily in the United Kingdom and China, follows a diverse cast of scientists who all come into contact with an extraterrestrial civilization, leading to various threats and humanity-wide changes. It is Benioff and Weiss' first television project since the conclusion of their series Game of Thrones (2011–2019) and modifies part of the original works' Chinese setting to include foreign characters and locations.
The first season was released on Netflix on March 21, 2024, with eight episodes, and received positive reviews. In May 2024, the series was renewed for a second season; a third season was confirmed later the same month. The series received six Primetime Emmy Award nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series.
