John B. Friedman (born December 8, 1934, Troy, New York) is an interdisciplinary medievalist and Emeritus Professor of English from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. He was first known for his work on classical myth and medieval literature, most particularly with respect to the Orpheus legend, and for his book on the monstrous races of men believed to live at the edges of the known world. More recently he has investigated how pixel count analysis could aid the palaeographer in determining the identity of medieval scribes, and the way material culture affects medieval and early modern fashion history. He is married to the medievalist Kristen Mossler Figg, and lives in Columbus, Ohio.
