[1]The Marathas under Mahadji Shinde invaded and plundered the Kingdom of Rohilkhand[2] in 1772 to punish or avenge the involvement of Rohilla Afghans in the Third Battle of Panipat. The Marathas sacked Najibabad and looted the Pathargarh fort in forms of horses, elephants, guns etc.

[3]The Rohilla Afghans were involved with the Durrani Empire in the Third Battle of Panipat against the Maratha Empire so Mahadji Shinde, the Maharaja of Gwalior State did not liked the involvement of Rohillas in the battle as he had personal enmity with the members of the Kingdom of Rohilkhand who had killed the brother of Mahadji.However, Mahadji Shinde invaded and captured Najibabad; sacked and destroyed the whole city and the Pathargarh fort.The Rohilla chieftain Zabita Khan fled to Punjab and the Marathas captured the royal family members of him and the Rohillas[4].
