The National Mural Awards is a 501c3 nonprofit organization whose mission is to celebrate the community-building power of murals as well as the artists who create them. Formed in 2022, the National Mural Awards boasts a nationwide network of judges who score artwork based on originality, composition, creativity, use of elements, and craftsmanship.
The awards operate through an open call in January of each year, with any mural completed in the United States during the previous year being eligible (ie, any mural painted in 2022 was eligible for the 2023 awards).[1] Awards are presented based on the region where the mural is painted, not where the artist is from. Regional gold, silver, and bronze winners are selected by a network of judges, with the gold winners from each region re-scored against each other to determine the national winners.
In 2024 the National Mural Award regions were realigned to match the boundaries established by existing regional art agencies.[2] Community awards were also established in 2024 to recognize community groups and organizations that use murals to further their mission. The 2024 Awards were held in Corpus Christi, Texas.[3]
