The Federal University of Minas Gerais (Portuguese: Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, UFMG) is a federal[4] research university located in the state of Minas Gerais. Its main and biggest campus is located in the city of Belo Horizonte, Brazil. It is one of Brazil's five largest and highest-ranked universities.[5][6][7][8] It offers 79 undergraduate education programs,[9] upon completion of their curricular schedule the student is awarded either a bachelor's degree, a licenciate degree, or a professional higher-education title (the latter usually applies to regulated health professions, e.g. medic), all officialized by the issue of a university diploma. It also has 90 postgraduate education programs,[10][11] awarding 30 postbaccalaureate specialization degrees,[12] 92 master's degrees,[13][14] and 72 doctoral degrees,[15][14] as well as 41 medical residency programs offered at UFMG's hospital facilities complexes.[16] The university also has campi at Tiradentes and Montes Claros. Most courses, however, are taught at the main campus, located in the Pampulha district of Belo Horizonte.

UFMG receives one of the highest amounts of federal funds and resources among all federal universities[17][18] and is the fifth best university in Latin America, according to the 2021 Times Higher Education ranking,[19] as well as the 3rd best university in Brazil.[20] Results of the Student's National Performance Exam (ENADE) usually rank UFMG's undergraduate degrees among the best in Brazil and national ranking systems usually place UFMG as one of the best in the country.[21][22][23][24]

  4. ^ In the Brazilian Higher Education context, Federal does not mean collegiate (even though most Federal Universities in Brazil enjoy a similarly collegiate system), but it means that the institution is funded by the Union (who is the fiscal-juridical person that embodies the Federation, in the context of the Federative Republic of Brazil), which implies they are necessarily free of charge for all.
