The four stars above Uruguay's football crest represent the four FIFA-organised championships won by the Uruguay national football team in 1924, 1928 (Olympic Games), 1930, and 1950 (World Cup).[1] Uruguay has claimed that the Olympic football tournaments of Paris 1924 and Amsterdam 1928 be recognized by global football associations from the outset as open world championships, the only editions to be subsequently accepted as equivalent in value to the FIFA World Cup.[2][3]

Nevertheless, FIFA clearly stated that Uruguay had won two World Cups, according to an article published on the body's website in 2023.[4] This position has been remaining as of July 2024, with the recognition of the 1930 and 1950 as "World Cup" titles won by Uruguay, separating the status of both competitions, World Cup and Olympic Games.[5][6] A similar statement had been previously made by CONMEBOL.[7]
