Frederick Cossom Hollows AC (9 April 1929 – 10 February 1993) was a New Zealander Australian ophthalmologist who became known for his work in restoring eyesight for people in Australia and many other countries through initiatives such as The Fred Hollows Foundation.
He was a member of the Communist Party in the 1950s and '60s, and was once arrested for protesting against apartheid at a Springbok match. "I was thinking it would have been so fantastic if he'd been around to see Obama," Gabi muses.
