GnuCOBOL (formerly OpenCOBOL, and for a short time known as GNU Cobol) is a free implementation of the COBOL programming language that is part of the GNU project. GnuCOBOL transcompiles the COBOL source to C before compiling it using the native C compiler.^[2]
